You will find the district Brakkeput enclosed between the well known luxurious residential areas Jan Sofat and Jan Thiel. What’s in a name: Brakkeput means “well with salty water”. Thanks to this well, Brakkeput Curacao used to be a large plantation. This plantation later on has become three plantations named: Brakkeput Ariba (ariba meaning up), Brakkeput Mei Mei (mei mei meaning middle) and Brakkeput Abou (abou meaning down).
On the location where plantation Brakkeput Abou used to be a very nice residential area, with mainly detached villa’s, has been built in recent years. Here, you will find several houses with very modern architecture, which is rather unique for Curacao.
